The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a digital platform where registered scholarship seekers can apply for over 50 scholarships from state and central governments, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and other government organizations. The NSP is a one-stop digital platform for scholarship application and disbursement under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP).

Scholarships are disbursed directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, ensuring a quick and transparent process through the Simplified, Mission-oriented, Accountable, Responsive, and Transparent process SMART (A Simplified, Mission-oriented, Accountable, Responsive, and Transparent) system.

According to officials, the platform has so far assisted the government in the implementation and disbursement of scholarships equaling more than INR 2,400 crores.

The platform alone has 110 lakh applications, more than 85 lakh of which have been verified.

The student will be unable to apply for a scholarship if the institution is not registered on the NSP portal.

The portal also allows institutions to register themselves if they have not already done so.

Step 1: Finding the Institute

  • Click the ‘Search an Institute’ button.
  • Fill out the form to get the list of institutions.
  • If the institution is not yet registered on the portal, candidates can request that it can do this by clicking here.

Step 2: Sign up for the National Scholarship Portal (NSP)

  • To register, all new users must go to the National Scholarship Portal‘s home page.
  • Click on the ‘New Registration’ button.
  • A page “Guidelines for Registration on NSP” will appear.
  • Examine the instructions thoroughly.
  • To continue, click the ‘Continue’ button.
  • Then fill in all the necessary details.
  • Click on the ‘Register’ button.
  • You will be sent a student application ID and password to your registered mobile number.

Step 3: Log in to the National Scholarship Portal

  • To begin the scholarship application, click on the login button.
  • Enter the application ID and password sent to your registered phone number.

Step 4: Make a new password (A mandatory step)

  • You will get an OTP after a successful login, so check the OTP on your mobile number and Enter.
  • You’ll be directed to a page where you can modify your password.
  • Continue after changing the password.

Step 5: Navigate to the Dashboard.

  • After changing the password, you will be taken to the Applicant’s Dashboard Page.
  • To begin the application, click on the ‘Application Form’ button.
  • Fill in all registration information, academic information, and basic information.
  • Then tap on the ‘Save & Continue button.
  • Fill in the contact information, scheme details, and upload all other necessary documents.
  • Click the ‘Save as Draft’ button (To confirm if you have entered the correct information)
  • Once confirmed, click the ‘Final Submit’ button.


Please keep in mind that once an application is submitted, it cannot be changed.

As a result, applicants are advised to double-check their information before clicking on the final submit button, as no changes will be accepted after that point.

When applying for a scholarship on NSP, students must upload certain documents to complete the application process.

However, students are not required to upload any documents if the scholarship amount is less than INR 50,000.

Given the advancement of mobile technology, the Government of India launched the ‘National Scholarship Portal Mobile App’ in 2018 to make scholarship applications easier and more convenient for students.

Students can download and install the mobile app on their respective mobile devices by going to the Google Play Store.

In addition, the NSP mobile app is available in the government’s earlier launched ‘UMANG’ app.

So, if you already have the UMANG app on your mobile device, you can begin applying for scholarships by registering at the NSP mobile app.

 Key Disbursement Facts of National Scholarship Portal

According to NSP, the academic year 2019-20 saw the disbursement of nearly INR 2,566 Cr in scholarships as of May 12, 2020. The scholarships are divided into three categories: Pre-Matric (Class 1 to 10) scholarships, Post-Matric (Class 11, 12, UG, PG) scholarships, and Higher Education scholarships (UG, PG, Professional and Technical Courses). In addition, the Department of School Education and Literacy offers another scholarship for students in grades 9-12.

The fund disbursements by various central ministries show a much lower investment in higher education when compared to pre-matric and Class 11-12 education.

In the fiscal year 2019-20, the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) distributed a total of rs 2190 Cr in scholarship funds.

The pre-matric scholarship schemes took the lion’s share, accounting for approximately 65 percent of the total fund.

the post-matric scholarship, which is started for Class 11 and 12 as well as UG and PG has a higher disbursement than the fund dedicated solely to higher education.

The Department of higher education (DHE), which is responsible for higher education, only distributed INR 137cr this fund is less than 10% of the size of the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) pre-Matrics scholarship.

the Ministries of Tribal Affairs and Social Justice awarded scholarships totaling INR 15 crore and INR 1.3 crore, respectively, to ST and SC students pursuing higher education.


Which courses are eligible for NSP scholarship?

Class 1-10, class 11-12, UG and PG, and technical and professional training are eligible for the scholarship.

Who can apply for a Scholarship On NSP?

All NSP Scholarships are offered by various departments operating under the government of India and governments of other states.

How is the scholarship money distributed to students if they are chosen?

 The scholarship funds are disbursed to students via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts. The government has a separate portal called PFMS that allows you to track the status of scholarship payments (Public Finance Management System).

To check the status of their payment, students must go to the PFMS official website and enter information such as the name of the bank, account number, and NSP application id.
